piri piri
A small, very hot chilli from Portuguese-speaking Africa, used in Portugal fresh, dried or as a hot sauce.
Piri piri is a small, pointed chilli that reached Portugal by way of its former colonies and is used there above all for grilled chicken and chilli oil. Fresh pods are hard to find, but dried pods, flakes and ready-made piri piri sauce are sold in well-stocked supermarkets, spice shops, Portuguese or African grocers and online.
Substitute:
Thai bird's eye chillies come closest in heat and flavour; dried chilli flakes or cayenne also work but taste flatter and less fruity.
